Mineral Powders for the Paints & Coatings Industry

Extender pigment & opacity enhancer

Industry Overview

The paints and coatings industry relies heavily on mineral powder fillers — known as extender pigments — to achieve the right balance of performance, aesthetics, and cost in paint formulations. At Ridhi Sidhi Microns, we manufacture a range of mineral powders graded for the paints sector, including high-whiteness calcite powder, ultrafine GCC, and functional talc powder. Mineral extender pigments serve multiple critical functions. They provide film build and body, enabling adequate coating thickness. They contribute to hiding power and opacity by working synergistically with primary pigments like TiO₂, allowing formulators to reduce expensive TiO₂ loading. Our calcite powder (calcium carbonate) is the most widely used extender pigment. With whiteness levels of 93–96% (Hunter Lab), our calcite grades are suitable for interior emulsions, exterior paints, distempers, primers, and putty formulations. Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) represents the premium end of our calcite range. With D50 particle sizes as fine as 2 micrometers and brightness exceeding 96 (ISO), our GCC grades are designed for high-quality emulsions where superior opacity and smooth film formation are essential. Talc powder brings unique functional properties. Its platy particle structure creates a barrier effect that improves moisture resistance and crack resistance. In exterior paints, talc improves weather resistance and reduces mud cracking.

Performance Benefits

TiO₂ Reduction

High-whiteness calcite and GCC work synergistically with TiO₂, allowing 10–25% reduction in expensive titanium dioxide loading.

Film Build & Coverage

Mineral extenders provide body and film build, improving application efficiency.

Scrub Resistance

Properly graded calcite and GCC improve the scrub resistance of interior emulsions.

Moisture Barrier (Talc)

Talc's platy structure creates a moisture barrier, improving weather resistance and crack resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can your mineral powders replace TiO₂ in paints?

Mineral extenders cannot fully replace TiO₂ but can significantly reduce its loading. High-whiteness calcite and GCC allow 10–25% reduction.

What whiteness levels do you offer?

Our calcite offers 93–96% whiteness (Hunter Lab), while our GCC provides 96+ brightness (ISO).

Do you supply ultrafine GCC for premium paints?

Yes. Our GCC grades with D50 as fine as 2 µm are specifically designed for high-quality interior and exterior emulsions.
